We all know that travel has picked up this summer, and many of us are ready to travel. Some of us have not traveled in over two years and are ready to explore our favorite cities again. Since COVID began, travel has changed in many ways, and we are providing a few tips and reminders so that you are not surprised or disappointed on your trip.

1. Expect crowds at popular tourist destinations and airports
If you are traveling this summer, popular destinations, airports, and national parks will be busy. Be sure to arrive at least 3 hours before your international flight. And PACK YOUR PATIENCE. Don't let a delay or cancellation ruin your entire trip. Instead, handle the situation with grace and courtesy and do your best to enjoy your vacation despite the inconveniences. Your memories will be priceless!

2. Make sure that the activity aligns with your level of fitness
If you plan to climb a mountain, be sure to do some training before you go. Acclimatize yourself to the higher elevation before you begin your trek. Ambulance service may not always be available, and the porters will only carry your luggage. Get re-certified in SCUBA if you haven't been in a while. Bring a walker or wheelchair if you are having issues walking.

3. Understand and respect the culture and customs
Show respect and behave appropriately for the environment. Follow the posted signs and ask locals for guidance. For example, dress modestly, wear a shawl to cover shoulders in a cathedral, remove shoes in a temple, and wear a head covering when in public. Learn a few helpful phrases in the language of the country you will be visiting. Locals appreciate the effort even if we mispronounce something.

4. Assume things work differently than at home
Familiarize yourself with what to expect when traveling to another country. For example, the toilets, drinking water, food safety, traffic, currency, and steering wheels may work differently than what you are used to in your city.

5. Know your insurance policy
If you suffer a fall on a cobblestone street in Athens, do you have the proper medical or travel insurance policy to cover a visit to a local doctor? A little coverage will give you a lot of peace of mind.

6. Respect traditions
Remember you are a visitor. Be willing to learn about new cultures and traditions of each new place you visit. Open your minds to experiencing foods and music that may be different from your own. Make friends with other travelers and learn about their country and what they have enjoyed on their trip.

7. Things will go wrong – do not sweat the small stuff
And there will be small stuff. Expect that you will have delays, schedule changes, and cancellations. If you begin your travel with the expectation that your experience will not be the same as it was pre-COVID, you will be great. If things run smoothly, relish in your good fortune.

Hotels may not have all of their services and amenities available. They may not have adequate staff at the reception, housekeeping, bar, or restaurant. They may not currently offer turn-down service or only provide housekeeping service every other day. If something is not working well in your room, kindly make that request. If it significantly affects your stay, you can request to change rooms. The key here is to be flexible and patient.

8. Situational awareness
Be careful taking those selfies! Don't walk backward near a cliff unless you are confident you have enough room. Avoid walking on damp rocks on the beach as you may get hit by the next big wave. Look both ways when crossing streets as traffic may move differently than at home. Always ask permission to photograph someone, and respect their privacy if they decline.  When using an ATM, be aware of your surroundings to ensure you are safe. Always be mindful of your belongings; keep money and credit cards in a money belt or under your clothing.

These tips can save you a lot of unwanted headaches and anxiety. And don't forget, WE are just a phone call away should you need help during your trip.
